“Professor Ying Jin” gives lectures on urban modeling, urban design, and city planning.  To generate innovative design solutions, he is especially interested in comprehending how human behavior, politics, and technology influence the growth of cities and their infrastructure.

His primary areas of research interest include urban history and computer models of cities.  Using computer models as test platforms to evaluate investment, regulation, pricing, and promotional efforts.

Professor Ying Jin has led multidisciplinary teams and accumulated a wealth of industry knowledge.  Major initiatives include long-term city region and transport plans in China and South America, sub-regional and local planning in the English Midlands, strategic planning of London and its environs, mapping urban poverty in emerging markets, and evaluating development and transport options for Cambridge and its environs. Additionally, the European Union is involved in transport and energy scenarios.  His primary areas of study in urban history are Chinese cities dating back to the Tang Dynasty in the seventh century and cities during the European Renaissance.

The Cities and Transport Research Group, under the direction of Professor Ying Jin at the Department of Architecture, is one of the top institutions in the world for developing and applying conceptual and useful models for cities and city regions.  These models have been used to evaluate innovative building, neighborhood, transportation, and energy system designs in policy and planning studies.  A case study from Cambridge University examined the group’s prior policy impacts in REF2014.

Professor Ying Jin is in charge of the city-scale data science and urban modeling applications at the EPSRC Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction (CSIC 2011-2020), among many other research initiatives.  Funded by Cambridge Ahead and the Combined Authority of Cambridge Shire and Peterborough, he is the Principal Investigator of a research project aimed at evaluating the various growth scenarios for the Combined Authority (2016-2020).  Additionally, he co-investigates the Smart Urban Design research project financed by the Cambridge-UC Berkeley-National University of Singapore Global Alliance program (2016-2018) and the EPSRC research project Managing Air for Green Inner Cities (2016-2018).  Since the inaugural year of the International Symposia on Applied Urban Modelling in 2011, he has served as the primary convenor.
